Los Incas can hit heights against plodding Paraguay

Peru will bid to reach their second straight Copa America semi-final when they take on Paraguay in the last eight on Friday.

Ricardo Gareca’s side have gone beyond the quarter-final stage in three of the last four continental tournaments and were the surprise runners-up to Brazil two years ago.

Their progression through Group B this year has been more impressive than their path to the semi-final in 2019 and they are rightly seen as favourites against a Paraguay that plodded through Group A in third place.

Los Guaraníes won two and lost two of their first-phase games, putting in their best display when shocking Chile 2-0 despite only having 31 per cent possession.

However, their prospects for further progression were damaged when playmaker Miguel Almiron left the pitch in tears against Uruguay on Tuesday.

Paraguay have since confirmed he suffered a ‘muscle edema’ injury and is definitely out of the quarter-final against Peru.

Almiron had scored one and created another against Chile and his absence will be hard to overcome against an opponent that Paraguay have not beaten in their last seven attempts.

During that woeful spell, they have only avoided defeat once and it is hard to see how they can do anything other than play with penalties in mind on Friday.

Peru have scored seven times in their last five – of which six have come in the second half – so we are taking them to progress here by the minimum scoreline even if they are made to wait for their winner.
