Plymouth Argyle vs Southend Predictions

Despite facing a Walsall team who’re fancied by many to struggle this season, Plymouth were unable to make a good start to the campaign. After losing first time up, the Pilgrims will be hoping to take all three points at the first time of asking in front of their home fans.

Like many teams on the opening day, Plymouth didn’t play too badly, though their performance wasn’t enough to take even a share of the spoils. Derek Adams’ men didn’t start brightly against a Walsall team who seemed intent on making the running, though they took the lead from a well worked free-kick. Having gone in front just five minutes before the break, the Pilgrims would have been bitterly disappointed to go in level. They did of course lose the game after Luke Leahy scored an excellent free-kick for the Saddlers, though positives can be taken from that performance.

Although they were hard to beat last season, especially during the second half of the campaign, Plymouth were never the sturdiest of teams. They often conceded goals but often outscored their opponents, and if their efforts on the opening day are anything to go by, they’ll need to score plenty of goals this season. They did look somewhat easy to get at on Saturday, but Plymouth did at least make their presence felt offensively. In fact, if they can replicate those forward efforts against a Southend side who’re known for conceding cheap goals, then they should do well in the final third on Saturday.

Like Plymouth, Southend lost at the weekend, though they will have been even more disappointed to do so. As they hosted Doncaster at Roots Hall, Chris Powell’s men, who’re known for being very strong on their own patch, dominated the game, adopted a proactive style, got forward with purpose, though they were unable to make their dominance pay. They found themselves three goals down before pulling two back late on.

Their match against Doncaster on the opening day highlighted the fact that they’re going to hurt teams offensively, especially if they can continue to dominate, though, as was the case last season, they looked easy to break against. A soft under-belly remains as far as the Shrimpers are concerned.

Last season, neither Plymouth nor Southend were strangers to high-scoring games, and if last weekend is anything to go by, the pair may continue to see goals go in left, right and centre this time around.

The Shrimpers, who won just five of their away games during the last campaign, were poor on their travels last season, especially defensively, though they do have the offensive quality to hurt Plymouth. However, keeping things tight at the other end is likely to prove beyond them, particularly if Chris Powell’s men are intent on playing their usual attacking football.

At the prices, ‘Over 2.5 Goals’, a bet which yielded a profit in 61% of Plymouth’s home matches in League One last season, is a must ahead of this fixture.
