Portland Timbers vs Toronto FC Predictions

Portland Timbers poor run of form has now seen them drop out of the play-off places in the Western Conference, but victory over Toronto on Thursday would see them return to the top six. The visitors beat fellow Canadians, Montreal Impact, on Sunday and another win on Thursday would see them move into seventh place and within touching distance of the play-offs.

Portland Timbers came up against one of the MLS’s toughest defences on Monday when they played host to Seattle Sounders and the home side could not break their guests backline down and ended up suffering a fourth straight league defeat.

The hosts ended the game with 58% of the overall possession, more shots on target, and far more corners than their guests, but still ended up on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline. The first half ended goalless as Portland knocked on the Seattle door, but could not find a way passed goalkeeper Frei.

Portland were having joy down their left flank during the early stages of the second half and created a few decent chances that were either blocked or narrowly wide of the mark. However, the winning goal arrived in the seventy-sixth minute when South Korea’s Kim Ki-Hee sauntered down the right side and into the Portland box unchallenged before seeing his low cross turned into his own goal by the unfortunate Cascante, who was clearly devastated by the event.

Seattle could have sat back and defended their lead but created two more chances to win the game late on and if it hadn’t been for some great defending then the visitors winning margin would have been higher.

Portland Timbers have to pick themselves up now and do have some positives from the Seattle defeat to take into Thursday’s game against Toronto, but they really need to score first to gain the confidence to go on and win their next game as heads drop when their opponents go in front as was evident against Seattle.

Toronto cruised to a 3-1 victory at home against Montreal Impact, with all four goals arriving in an action packed first half. Two goals from Italian striker Giovinco in the opening twenty-two minutes put the hosts 2-0 up, and Osorio added a third just shy of the half hour mark to virtually wrap up all three points for Toronto.

Silva did managed to pull a goal back for the visitors a minute after they went 3-0 down, but despite bringing Amarikwa on at the break and ending the game with 54% of the overall possession and ten corners to the hosts one, Montreal Impact could not find a way back into this match and ended up losing 3-1.

Toronto have now lost just one of their last six in all competitions and after a slow start to the season Giovinco is now the clubs leading goalscorer in the MLS with ten goals. Argentina’s Váleri has nine in the league for the hosts Portland Timbers, while teammate Armenteros is only one behind that tally with eight. Both teams have goals in them so don’t be surprised to see goals at both ends of the pitch, but Toronto are the clear form favourites heading into the game.

We’re confident that Toronto will pick up something from their trip to Portland and have backed the visitors with a double chance bet. Toronto have won three and drawn two of their last seven matches against Portland Timbers. The hosts have lost their last four MLS games, while Toronto have only lost one of their last six matches in all competitions. In terms of a final score, we’re backing a narrow 2-1 win for the Canadians.
