Portsmouth vs Gillingham predictions for Saturday’s League One fixture at Fratton Park. After picking up another big three points on Tuesday, Pompey will be looking to cement their position at the head of the table. Continue reading below for all our free tips and predictions.

Reason For Portsmouth vs Gillingham Betting Tips

Portsmouth’s fine form continued on Tuesday night, as they went away to Ricoh Arena and returned to the south coast with all three points. After yet another good result, Kenny Jackett’s men, who’re still unbeaten, will be looking to maintain their position at the top of the table by beating Gillingham in front of a home crowd on Saturday afternoon.

Pompey did win during the week, though they weren’t exactly comfortable winners. In a tight game, the visitors had that extra bit of quality, though Kenny Jackett will be hoping to see his side exert more control now back on their own patch. Fortunately, Gillingham aren’t exactly a side in form, so it’s not difficult to expect better from the league leaders.

On their own patch this season, Portsmouth have impressed. Since beating Luton at Fratton Park on the opening day, Pompey haven’t looked back and have delivered some dominant performances on their own patch, while they also thrashed Gillingham here by four goals to nil in the Checkatrade Trophy just a month ago.

What’s been impressive about Pompey at home is how they’ve always created more than their opponents. Not only have Jackett’s men scored 11 and conceded just four, but the underlying numbers back up such solid goal figures. Saturday’s hosts have accumulated 9.6 expected goals for, while they’ve conceded just 4.3, which gives them a very respectable expected goal difference of +5.3 on their own patch.

In contrast, when plying their trade away from home, the Gills have struggled to get their offensive efforts to outweigh what they’ve done in the defensive third. After somewhat fortuitously beating Accrington by two goals to nil away on the opening weekend, the Gills have failed to outscore their opponents when playing on the road, as they’ve lost three and drawn one, scoring six and conceding nine in the process. What’s more, the underlying numbers tell us that they’ve not exactly been unlucky either.

On their travels, Gillingham have conceded 8.8 expected goals, while they’ve managed just 5.2 at the other end. Moreover, they’ve conceded an average of 6.2 shots on target away from home, which is the third worst in the division, while they’re averaging just 3.8 at the other end. A far cry from Portsmouth’s average of 5.4 for and just two against on home soil.

Frankly, we’re talking about two teams who’re operating at opposite levels of the League One spectrum. Not only do the hosts have more quality, but their performances, particularly at home, suggest that they ought to find it easy to cut open a weak Gillingham rear-guard. With the hosts averaging an expected goal difference of +1.06, coupled with Gillingham’s -0.72, ‘Portsmouth –1 Handicap’ gets the nod.

Head to Head

Portsmouth, who’ve won three of the last five renewals of this fixture, have a pleasing recent record against the Gills. Gillingham have won just one of their last five games against Pompey, though they did win when the teams met at this venue last season.
