PSV vs Basel Predictions

PSV had an incredible season last season, picking up a total of 83 points from their 34 games in the league, losing just 3 times – the fewest of any team in the league. Unfortunately for PSV though, Ajax had probably their best season in 20 years, winning the league by 3 points, winning their domestic cup, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

PSV reached the group stage of the Champions League last season, beating BATE in the qualifying rounds on their way 5-2 on aggregate. In the group stages they only picked up 2 points, but they did score in 5 of their 6 games, and as such Both Teams to Score landed in those 5 games. Those games included matches against Barcelona, Tottenham and Inter Milan, with the Dutch side only failing to score at the Nou Camp. They also had BTTS land in all of their last 3 home games in the Eredivisie.

Basel had a decent campaign last year in what was a bizarre season in the Swiss Super League. They finished 2nd in the league, 20 points behind champions Young Boys, but also 25 points ahead of 3rd place Lugano, and so had nothing to play for long before the season ended. They have got their domestic season underway with a 4-1 away win against Sion. Basel have scored in all of their last 25 away from home in the Swiss League.

In the Champions league, Basel had a very short lived campaign last season, losing in the 2nd qualifying round to Greek side PAOK. However they did score in the away leg as they lost 2-1. The previous season was much kinder to Basel though, as the Swiss outfit reached the last 16 of the competition before eventually losing to English champions Manchester City. They scored in 3 of the 4 away games they played in the competition that year, including 2-0 wins against CSKA Moscow and Benfica, as well as a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium against Man City.

The two sides look evenly matched and can think themselves unlucky to have drawn each other so early on, as they could easily have met in the play-off round otherwise. However, we do think that PSV have the slight advantage playing at home. Both sides like scoring and see BTTS land a lot in the Champions League, so we are going for Both Teams to Score, with a 2-1 winning scoreline for PSV.
