Queen Of The South vs Raith Predictions

After their 3-1 away win in midweek, Queen of the South are in a strong position heading into the second leg on Saturday. The hosts are aiming to wrap up a place in the Championship by winning this promotion/relegation playoff, especially given Raith’s troubles at this stage in recent seasons. The midweek loss means Raith have now won just once in 11 playoff clashes at this level, which leaves us expecting more joy for Queen of the South in their bid to wrap up the tie.

The hosts were in total control of the first leg, so they should revel in having home advantage going into this clash. The majority of their points and goals this term came at Palmerston Park, so there’s plenty of history pointing towards a strong display from Queen of the South at the weekend. They may have finished up the regular season campaign in disappointing fashion, but they are in a perfect position to secure Championship safety with a positive result in this clash.

Meanwhile, Raith are left with the task of forcing a comeback in this trip. They needed to get off to a strong start at home in the semis, just about getting through the away leg with a 1-1 draw at Forfar. Having just edged out a side from their own division, it’s hard to see them winning by two goals at Championship opposition. The one thing going for the visitors is that they have the goals on the road in order to cause problems, having scored 1.89 per trip in the league this term. However, their defence leaves a lot to be desired.

Queen of the South scored 63% of their total goals at home in the league this season, while they found the net in 72% of their home games despite struggling at the bottom of the table. They’ve certainly peaked in front of goal against the League One sides in the playoffs, as they beat Montrose 5-0 at home before their 3-1 first leg win against Raith. That should be enough to see them get on the scoresheet again this weekend.

However, Raith saw a huge 94% of their away games last season finish with both teams scoring. Their last 10 away matches overall have seen both teams score in every one, while BTTS has landed in seven of their last eight games in the playoffs. With five of the last six clashes between these two finishing with both teams scoring, we think that BTTs is the best option on this weekend’s clash.
