Girona poised to be top at Christmas

Girona have been the surprise package in Spain this term and currently lead the way in La Liga, two points ahead of Real Madrid in second, knowing that a win against Real Betis on Thursday would see them keep top spot for Christmas and heading into 2024.

Michel’s side have lost just once all season, to Madrid, and their devastating away form is a huge reason for their league position.

Girona are unbeaten in their ten away matches this term and have won their last nine, including a 4-2 win over reigning champions Barcelona in their last road game, suggesting they may be too strong for a Betis side who have lost their way of late.

Betis’ bad run to continue

Manuel Pellegrini’s side were firmly in top four conversations as recently as November, but their recent form has left a lot to be desired.

Betis’ only win in their last six matches was a narrow 2-1 victory against fourth-tier side Villanovense in the Copa Del Rey, with disappointing results against Sparta Prague and Rangers seeing them crash out of the Europa League too.

They will be keen to get back on track but a visit of the league leaders could make that difficult, even if the Green and Whites have won the last five meetings between the sides.

This Girona side is a completely different entity to any before and they are looking more and more like genuine title contenders every week, suggesting Betis will be in for a tough time on Thursday night.
