Real Salt Lake vs Portland Timbers Predictions

Real Salt Lake secured a final day of the season win away at Vancouver Whitecaps where the scoreline ended 1-0, while Portland Timbers were a little more convincing in their 3-1 home win against SJ Earthquakes.

All of the stats suggest that we won’t see both teams score in Sunday’s Playoff tie and we’ve backed Real Salt Lake to claim a 1-0 win in front of their own fans.

While Portland Timbers have had the better of Sunday’s hosts over the last couple of seasons it’s Real Salt Lake that edge the head to head record between the pair with 11 wins to Portland Timbers’ 10. Both teams scored in just one of the last four meetings between these two clubs, so you can see why we’re not expecting goals at both ends of the pitch this weekend.

The performances of both clubs heading into Sunday’s clash as well as the host’s overall record this season adds weight to our prediction for a 1-0 win for Real Salt Lake, as both teams scored in just three of Real Salt Lake’s last seven and three of Portland Timbers’ last six matches. Real Salt Lake had the second-best defensive record in the MLS this season, conceding just 41 goals in 34 matches, and managed to keep three clean sheets in their last six matches. Portland Timbers failed to score in three of their last six matches and Real Salt Lake won their final two games of the season, so you can see why we believe the hosts will progress on Sunday.

Real Salt Lake finished 4pts and three places above Portland Timbers in the Western Conference table and on the whole outplayed their guests in most departments, though Portland Timbers scored more goals during the regular season but still ended the campaign with a worse goal difference.

We’re confident that we won’t see both teams score on Sunday and have predicted a final scoreline of 1-0 in favour of the hosts Real Salt Lake. Portland Timbers have won their last five matches against Real Salt Lake but the visitors failed to score in three of their last six matches and only won once during that final six-game period. The hosts had an excellent defensive record in the MLS this season and this is where we feel Real Salt Lake have the advantage on Sunday.
