Red Bull Salzburg vs St. Polten Predictions

Salzburg’s title is secured, so they have little to play for, though that hasn’t stopped them winning each of their last four. St. Polten can mathematically finish in a Europa League qualification place, but they need to win, and Sturm Graz need to lose, while there also need to be a hefty swing in goal difference, so it’s a longshot.

The title has been Salzburg’s for a while, so it would’ve been easy for Marco Rose’s men to take their foot off the pedal, but that’s not what they’ve done, especially not at this venue. Sunday’s hosts have won each of their last four at Red Bull Arena, scoring 13 goals and conceding four in the process.

From a defensive point of view, they have weakened ever so slightly; before their last four home games, they’d conceded just six in 11, so it’s fair to say that, having shipped four in four, they’ve become less sturdy, but their attacking efforts have remained strong. Salzburg have scored at least twice in each of their last four at home, while they’ve scored at least three goals in three of those four. What’s more, they’ve averaged a pleasing 2.01 expected goals for.

In contrast, St. Polten’s recent efforts on the road haven’t been great. While Salzburg have won each of their last four at home, St. Polten have won just one of their last four travelling matches, while they’ve now won just one of their last 11 away from the comforts of home.

Unlike Sunday’s hosts, scoring goals has been a bit of an issue for St. Polten this season, especially on the road. They’ve notched just 13 goals in 15 away games, which means that they’re the second lowest scorers away from home in the Austrian Bundesliga this term. They also average a rather weak 0.97 expected goals for on their travels, while their most recent attacking effort on the road was a weak one, as they scored zero goals and created just 0.54 expected goals for when losing 4-0 against Wolfsberger.

What’s more, when St. Polten visited this venue earlier in the campaign, they were battered by five goals to one. On that occasion, they created little going forward, as they posted just 0.73 expected goals for, while they gave plenty away, surrendering 3.25. Such evidence points towards Ranko Popović’s men struggling on Sunday afternoon.

From a betting point of view, this is certainly not a game to get excited about. The best option appears to be ‘Salzburg -2 Handicap’. A mere repeat of the effort that saw them beat St. Polten by five goals to one at this venue back in December would be more than enough for the hosts to end the season on a high by registering a commanding win.
