Rennes vs Orleans Predictions

Julien Stéphan was only appointed manager in December but he has already won over the Rennes faithful, with his local roots and young age of 38 convincing fans that he is the future of the club. He has only taken charge of eleven home matches but he is still to taste defeat at Roazhon Park and will be confident of that again as he aims for his first piece of silverware as a senior manager.

He has drastically improved the form of the team with them losing just four of their last 19 games in all competitions. They should have continued their fantastic home form at the weekend as they dominated the corners, possession and shots on target statistics but Marseille managed to weed their way to a 1-1 draw, despite Rennes’ best efforts. They have to turn their attention to the Coupe de France now, leaving behind the good league form which has seen them win six of their last eleven games. Stéphan has only taken charge of three Coupe de France games so far but after his side’s fantastic 2-1 beating of Lille in the last round, they should be confident of another win to take them to the semis.

Orléans suffered a poor start to the season with three consecutive defeats and this is still having an effect on their league standing but they really improved in their last few matches, with them now seven games unbeaten with five wins raising them up to 8th in Ligue 2. They are just five points off of the play-off spots but have to turn their attention to the cup, hoping that they can use the momentum of their last two games to their advantage.

They have won back-to-back games and even though they weren’t against the highest quality of opposition, they have generally been on a great run and managed to beat top of the table Metz (1-0) in the previous round of the cup, which shows their quality. They have kept clean sheets in four of their last six games and have a pretty solid away record ahead of this match with eleven wins and just four defeats in their last 17 matches on the road.

Rennes will be wary of this and while we think Orléans will give the Ligue 1 outfit a good game, Stéphan’s fantastic home record should carry them through this. Due to Rennes’ horrible start to the season under Sabri Lamouchi, their chances of European qualification are slim, with them 9th in Ligue 1 so this competition will be quite important to them as a potential avenue to the Europa League. Rennes have scored ten goals in their last five home games but with them conceding seven in their last four, we’re going to back them to win 2-1. Orléans have shown great attacking talent and are very good on the road, but with the stakes of the match and Rennes’ home record, they should be able to just nick this one.
