River Plate vs Cerro Porteno Predictions

Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores quarter final, first leg action sees Argentines River Plate doing battle with Paraguayans Carro Porteno at the Estadio Monumental. The hosts will be looking to establish a substantial lead to take with them into the second leg.

After winning the Libertadores last year, beating arch rivals Boca Juniors in the final, River Plate are well on their way towards continental glory once again and are now one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Los Millonarios first advanced from a group containing Alianza Lima, Palestino and Internacional, prior to seeing off Cruzeiro in the round of 16 after holding their nerve in a penalty shootout.

Marcelo Gallardo’s troops come into this game in excellent shape and confidence is sky high after two recent domestic performances of stunning quality. The side first saw off Lanus 3-0 in a rampant home performance whilst at the weekend they put on a display that will be remembered for years to come, trouncing reigning champions and local rivals Racing 6-1 away from home.

Meanwhile, coming from a fairly weak domestic scene, few imagined Cerro Porteno would make any significant waves in the Libertadores this year but the side have thus far done well. El Ciclon managed to advance from a group containing Atletico Mineiro, Nacional and Zamora prior to getting the better of River’s compatriots San Lorenzo to reach this point.

Cerro know they a big underdogs in this game however and River represent a big step in quality compared to the sides they have thus far faced. Man for man, the Paraguayans look weaker than the hosts in pretty much every area of the pitch and without a win in 3 Copa Libertadores away games, all focus has to be on merely remaining in the tie ahead of the second leg.

Ultimately, this is a match and tie we are expecting River to win and it’d be a huge shock fi they didn’t. They’ve shown over recent years they have the nerve to handle big continental nights and in good shape at the moment, they’ll have full faith in their ability to get the job done and reach the semi final.

All things considered, it’s backing River on the -1 handicap that has captured our attention here and looks to provide good value at current odds. River will want to do most of their work in the first leg and given the rate at which they’re scoring goals, they should be able to do that. River are unbeaten in 7 home matches, winning 5 times in the process and we think they’ll be able to prolong that streak, with a 2-0 margin of home victory on the cards.
