River Plate vs Independiente Predictions

Sunday’s Superliga Argentina actions sees two of Argentina’s biggest clubs doing battle, with River Plate playing host to Independiente. It’s the home side who arrive as favourites to win the match.

Following a 0-0 draw with Chileans Palestino in midweek, River have made a disappointing start to their Copa Libertadores defence but attention must now switch to league affairs and ensuring they qualify for next year’s edition of it. Currently holding the last of the top four spots, River have their destiny in their own hands but need to win their remaining three matches, with Atletico Tucuman hot on their heels.

Although Marcelo Gallardo’s troops didn’t convince in midweek, they’re still in good form and as such, confidence won’t be too badly affected. Indeed, Los Millonarios are unbeaten in an impressive 10 matches, winning 6 times in the process and having won their last 3 Superliga home games, their prospects look bright coming into Sunday’s match.

Meanwhile, it’s been a disappointing campaign on the whole for visitors Independiente and the best they can realistically hope for now is a Copa Sudamericana spot. Currently 8th, El Rojo have lacked consistency and dropped points a little too easily, but will want a strong end to the season to at least make sure they’re involved in some kind of continental competition in 2020.

Nonetheless, Ariel Holan’s troops do not arrive in the best of form and thus their chances in this game do not look the best. The side may have won their last Superliga outing against Aldosivi but had previously lost to both Gimnasia and arch enemy Racing and having also not won any of their last 5 away games, it’s apparent the side aren’t really a force to be reckoned with on the road.

All things considered, you have to have River down as comfortable favourites to win this match. Independiente aren’t a bad side, but they’re pretty weak on the road and lack consistency this season and up against a River outfit that is stronger than them on paper and holding home advantage, the visitors look set to struggle.

As such, we really like the look of backing a home win in this clash and are happy to do so with maximum confidence. River have won their last 4 home league matches against Independiente and we think they’ll be able to extend said streak with a comfortable 2-0 margin of victory.
