River Plate vs Racing Club Predictions

Sunday’s Superliga Argentina action sees local rivals River Plate and Racing Club doing battle. Plenty of action is expected at both ends of the pitch as the two sides chase the 3 points on offer.

After making a terrible start to 2019 by losing home matches against Defensa y Justicia, Union de Santa Fe and Patronato, hosts River finally appear to be back on the right track, winning away at both Godoy Cruz and Velez over the last week and a half. Marcelo Gallardo’s troops now have some momentum behind them and will be desperate to continue their streak of wins with another on Sunday.

Los Millonarios could really do with maximum points once again, as they’re currently standing 7th in the Superliga, some 6 points behind the all important top 4 places. The conquering of the Copa Libertadores in 2018 certainly has affected River’s league position significantly, and they’re now faced with playing catch up in the 9 fixtures that remain.

Meanwhile, every match is a final now for visiting Racing Club, as they desperately try to hold onto top spot. La Academia have been simply fantastic throughout the campaign, winning 13 of the 17 games contested, but with surprise package Defensa y Justicia hot on their heels, the visitors can afford no slip-ups, even in a venue as tricky to visit as the Monumental.

Racing have certainly showed their title credentials since action resumed this year, winning 3-1 at Aldosivi prior to running out victors by the same scoreline at home to Huracan last weekend. Having now won their last 4 league matches, as well as 6 of their last 8 Superliga away games, confidence is extremely high coming into Sunday’s game and the side will be desperate to take the points home.

Ultimately, we’re expecting a very open game here, given that both outfits have talented attacking players in abundance and that a draw is of no real use for either side. River need to keep winning in order to try and salvage a Libertadores place, whereas the pressure is on Racing at the summit.
