RKC vs NEC Nijmegen Predictions

Both of these sides went into the Play-Offs in good spirits after strong finishes to the regular season, but it was NEC who rose to the challenge best in Friday’s 1st leg encounter at Goffertstadion. The Nijmegen outfit were decisive in establishing an early two goal lead, and they will be hoping to kill the tie in Waalwijk this Tuesday to set up a 2nd Round clash with either De Graafschap or Excelsior.

NEC have been revitalised since Ron De Groot replaced the outgoing Jack De Gier at the start of April and the Nijmegen side progressed to the next level with a cosy 2-0 success over RKC on Friday night.

De Groot’s men are making Goffertstadion a fortress once again and their eighth home victory from nine means that they have one foot in the 2nd Round going into Tuesday’s reverse in Waalwijk.

Goals from Jordy Bruijn and Mike Ndayishimiye put NEC two to the good inside 15 minutes in the 1st leg, and from that point on RKC never really looked like getting back into the contest. Boss Fred Grim certainly faces a massive task to turn this one around at Mandemakers Stadion, although he’ll believe it’s possible if his charges can perform to their best.

They accounted for champions Twente 4-1 in Waalwijk a few weeks ago, and a performance close to that standard could certainly make things interesting. RKC have won three and drawn one of their last four outings at home, and they will take comfort from the 1-0 success which they posted over NEC here back in November.

Nonetheless, we think that NEC can see this one through, as it’s difficult to envisage them blowing their healthy lead based on current form. They have not been quite as fluent on the road but have only lost two from their last nine away, and they have landed victories against Jong PSV (1-2) and Volendam (2-3) in recent weeks. With a potent attack that has netted 17 in their last seven games, spearheaded by Eerste Divisie top scorer Ferdy Druijf, this game should really be played to suit the visitors as RKC will be doing all the chasing.

The hosts are respected in their own back yard based on their recent results, however we think that NEC can exploit them as they seek to get back into the tie, and we’re opting for a 2-3 correct score in favour of De Groot’s side as they seek to bag their eighth win from nine against RKC.
