Roma to Win and Under 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

While Roma are clear favourites to beat their second-tier visitors, only one of their last eight Serie A matches has contained more than two goals, and Genoa have seen under 2.5 goals scored in six of their last seven Serie B contests.

Roma 1-0

Reason for tip

Roma have underperformed their expected goals tally by a greater margin than any Serie A team this term, but they have only lost to Napoli and Lazio since early October. Genoa may keep things competitive after recording Serie B’s second-best defensive record, but we expect the Giallorossi to triumph in the end.

Roma vs Genoa Predictions

  • Roma have seen under 2.5 goals scored in seven of their last eight Serie A games.
  • The Giallorossi rescued a 2-2 draw at Milan last time out, but they did not have a shot on target until the 87th minute of that game.
  • No Serie A team has underperformed their expected goals (xG) tally by as much as Roma this term.
  • Second-tier Genoa have seen under 2.5 goals scored in six of their last seven league matches.

Giallorossi look to build on late show

Roma rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw at Milan in their last Serie A outing on Sunday, scoring twice in the dying moments after failing to record a shot on target until the 87th minute. While Jose Mourinho’s side will expect to create more chances against Serie B side Genoa on Thursday, they have not been free-scoring of late, and Il Grifone may fancy their chances of keeping it competitive.

Roma’s 2-2 draw at Milan is the only one of their last eight Serie A games to feature over 2.5 goals, and no Serie A team has underperformed their expected goals tally (21 goals from 29.5 xG) than the Giallorossi this season – outlining their repeated failure to turn their dominance into goals. At the other end, however, only Juventus, Napoli and Lazio have conceded fewer Serie A goals than Roma this term, and that defensive solidity may put Mourinho’s men among the Coppa Italia favourites.

Genoa are well placed to make a bid for an immediate return to Serie A, sitting third in the second tier, three points off the automatic promotion places. Former striker Alberto Gilardino took over on a permanent basis recently after leading the side as interim coach, and he has maintained their solid streak – six of Genoa’s last seven games have contained under 2.5 goals.

Roma to edge tight affair

While Roma are understandably clear favourites for Thursday’s game, the prospect of rotation and the strong defensive record of Genoa could make it a competitive affair, so backing the visitors to restrict the game to under 2.5 goals could be a solid play.

Meanwhile, a hard-fought 1-0 win for the hosts, who have only lost to Napoli and Lazio since early October – could represent a decent correct score prediction.
