Romania vs Faroe Islands Predictions

This Tuesday’s clash in Group F of Euro 2020 qualifying is a ‘must win’ for the hosts. Romania are strong favourites to beat the Faroe Islands and it’s vital they do if they are to stand much chance of progressing from what is a tough group. Both sides are hoping to bounce back from defeats in their opening fixtures.

Romania lost 2-1 away to Sweden in a crunch clash between two teams who are expected to battle for 2nd place in this group with Spain the favourites to win it. Romania had been in good form prior to that game, going undefeated through the Nations League and they should at least take some momentum into this from a decent 2nd Half display in Stockholm on Saturday.

The Faroe Islands have caused the odd upset over recent years but they remain one of the minnows of European football. They met fellow group outsiders Malta on Saturday and went down to a 2-1 defeat, which will come as a disappointment after they took 4 points off the same opposition in the recent Nations League. The Faroes will now do well to avoid the wooden spoon in this six-team group.

They are though quite adept at going away to much bigger nations and effectively parking the bus. That is likely to be their tactic here and their away results over recent years suggest they will be tough to break down. They only conceded 6 goals in their 5 away Euro 2016 qualifiers, a huge improvement on previous campaigns. They largely built on that in 2018 World Cup qualifying, with two away clean sheets while they only lost 2-0 away to eventual qualifiers Switzerland and 1-0 in Hungary.

A similar kind of outcome appears likely here. Romania have kept clean sheets in all of their last 4 home internationals. They should be more than capable of keeping a limited Faroes attack quiet in this one. You have to go back to 2012 against Andorra for the last time they netted more than 3 goals in a competitive home game so they aren’t in the habit of hammering teams and as a point of reference, they only won 1-0 when they hosted the Faroes in Euro 2016 qualifying.

Given all that, backing Romania & Under 2.5 Goals could be worth a punt while backing Romania to Win 2-0 may be the way to go in the Correct Score market.
