Roma to Win

Reason for tip

Sampdoria are one of just two winless teams in Serie A this season, and have recorded three defeats in their five home league outings. Roma, meanwhile, have won three of their last four games in Serie A, beating Inter Milan on their most recent domestic road trip.

Roma 2-0

Reason for tip

Sampdoria have failed to score multiple goals in a single Serie A match this season, and have failed to net in three of their last five home games. Roma, meanwhile, possess Serie A’s best defence when judged using expected goals (xG) data, and should have few troubles against a team with just two home goals to their name in 2022-23.

Sampdoria vs Roma Predictions

  • Sampdoria are yet to win a Serie A match this season, losing four of their last five games.
  • Roma, meanwhile, have won three of their last four league games.
  • The Giallorossi have already taken 10 points on the road this season, a tally only bettered by Napoli and Atalanta.

Struggling Samp set for more misery

While Dejan Stankovic’s first game at the helm did see Sampdoria end a four-match losing streak by drawing with Bologna, they remain glued to the foot of Serie A, joining Cremonese as one of the division’s two winless outfits. Sampdoria need to start picking up results soon, but Monday’s visit of Roma looks unlikely to be a turning point in their season.

Samp have lost six of their nine league games this season, including three of their five matches on home soil. While the hosts’ record of 17 goals conceded in their first nine matches is worse than all but Cremonese (19) in Serie A, their attacking returns are not much better; they have failed to score multiple goals in any Serie A contest this campaign, failing to net in three of their five home games.

Roma, meanwhile, have won three of their last four Serie A games, limiting their struggles to Europe and posting a huge victory over Inter on their last domestic away trip. While an injury to Paulo Dybala – their top Serie A goalscorer with five strikes this term – represents a blow, Roma should have more than enough quality for an away win – Jose Mourinho’s men have already taken 10 points on the road this season, more than all but Napoli and Atalanta in Serie A.

Giallorossi set for fruitful trip

Given Sampdoria’s dreadful start to the season and Roma’s emergence as genuine top-four contenders, backing the Giallorossi for an away win at a shades of odds-on is a no-brainer for Monday’s match.

Meanwhile, Roma have allowed their opponents just 6.6 expected goals (xGA) this season – the best record in Serie A by some distance, and they could be set for a 2-0 win.
