San Jose Earthquakes vs Montreal Impact Predictions

SJ Earthquakes were the worst team in the MLS last season and Sunday’s hosts have only won one of their six pre-season friendlies, which suggests its going to be another tough campaign for the California club. Montreal Impact were close to making the Play-Offs last season and after going unbeaten in pre-season the Canadians will have high hopes for 2019.

SJ Earthquakes failed to score in their first two pre-season friendlies and then lost their next two, but a 3-0 win over LAFC and a 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders means they head into Sunday’s opening game of the season on the back of a couple of positive results. Montreal Impact didn’t concede a single goal in their five pre-season games, drawing 0-0 with Tampa Bay Rowdies and the MLS’ newest franchise Cincinnati, and beating DC United, Philadelphia Union, and Nashville. The visitors form suggests they could go one better than they managed last season and claim a place in the Play-Offs.

The recent history between the two clubs and each teams performances during pre-season suggests there wont be many goals in Sunday’s game, with the most likely result being a draw. Five of the last seven meetings between these two clubs have produced under 2.5 goals, while SJ Earthquake and Montreal Impact failed to score in three of their last six pre-season games. Each of Montreal Impact’s last six matches have produced under 2.5 goals, and the Canadians have kept five clean sheets in their last six matches. With not many goals being scored and the visitors keeping a lot of clean sheets of late we’re ready to back Sunday’s game to end as a goalless draw.

Cristian Espinoza and Judson have both joined SJ Earthquakes on loan, while Fatai Alashe has joined Cincinnati after a successful loan spell with the MLS’ newest franchise. Former Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna adds experience to the Montreal Impact back line this season, with Maximiliano Urruti joining the club from Dallas. Alejandro Silva, Raheem Edwards, and Rod Fanni have all left the club. We’re confident that under 2.5 goals will be scored in Sunday’s game, and have backed a final score of 0-0. Montreal Impact have been fantastic defensively over pre-season, and both teams have drawn two of their last six matches 0-0. Under three goals have been scored in five of the last seven encounters between the pair and we’re expecting another tight and tense affair on Sunday.
