San Lorenzo vs Junior Predictions

Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores group stage action sees Argentines San Lorenzo doing battle with Colombians Junior. A close game is expected to be in order, with little looking like separating the two.

Jorge Almiron may well have been the San Lorenzo manager since last November, but he still hasn’t won a game in charge of El Ciclon and it’s fair to say his reign isn’t going as expected. The hosts are now 15 matches without a win and the pressure is mounting for them, as evidenced by the fact that the players were this week paid a visit by an angry group of hardcore supporters.

Whilst San Lorenzo have at least drawn 9 of said matches, including last week’s group stage opener away at Alianza Lima, it’s fair to say that the run simply cannot go on and a poor result in this match could even see Almiron depart. In normal circumstances, the hosts would be expected to advance from the group they’re in but rock bottom of the domestic table, it’s clear for all to see that they’re not in the best of shapes to contest South America’s biggest club competition.

Meanwhile, Junior arrive desperate for a result as well, having lost their group opener to Palmeiras last weekend. Coming into the competition off the back of running out domestic champions last year, Los Tiburones were hopeful of putting a strong run together in the competition but on the basis of their first showing, that doesn’t look likely

Nonetheless, the Colombians remain in decent enough form overall and the aforementioned defeat ranks as their only one over their last 11 matches, so confidence still remains reasonably high ahead of this trip to Buenos Aires. Unbeaten in 5 away games, of which they’ve won 4, the visitors clearly are capable of securing results on the road which leaves their prospects looking quite high prior to kick off.

Ultimately, we’re expecting a balanced game in a fixture neither team can really afford to lose. San Lorenzo, far all their troubles, can be pretty difficult to beat on a continental night at home and whilst Junior are in the better shape of the two, it’s still a big ask for them to come and win on Argentine soil.

All things considered, we really like the look of backing a draw here. As mentioned above, San Lorenzo are drawing more than they’re losing and 4 of their last 5 home games have ended all square and with 3 of Junior’s last 5 games having ended in draws, a 1-1 full time scoreline could well be on the cards..
