San Lorenzo vs Lanus Predictions

Sunday’s Superliga Argentina action sees Lanus making the short trip to face off with San Lorenzo. With both sides in less than inspiring shape, a dull encounter is expected to be in order.

San Lorenzo may have finished third last season, but they don’t look like ending the season anywhere near that high this time around. The side put in some concerning performances towards the back end of last campaign and look the weakest they have been in recent memory at this current point in time.

Pressure is mounting on boss Claudio Biaggio and his uninspiring brand of football, after the hosts were fortunate to take a point away from Tigre on opening day and even luckier to advance on a technicality in the rule book in continental action, progressing from the second round of the Copa Sudamericana despite losing twice to Chilean minnows Deportes Temuco. It’s clear for all to see that all is not well in home ranks and if performances don’t improve swiftly and a slow start to the season is suffered, Biaggio is unlikely to retain his post.

Similarly, away manager Ezequiel Carboni is under fire, with Lanus looking a fraction of what they once were since he came in. El Granate made the final of the Copa Libertadores at the end of 2017 but then lost manager Jorge Almiron and several key players and Carboni has struggled to pick the pieces up ever since.

The visitor’s squad is perhaps over-reliant on young players and the manager’s job is not an easy one but expectations are still high at the club. After ending last season in 21st place, a quick start to the new campaign is needed to raise spirits in Lanus ranks but having blown a 2-0 home lead to Defensa y Justicia, an ideal start certainly hasn’t been made towards achieving that aim.

Whilst both teams drew 2-2 on opening day, far fewer sparks are expected come Sunday, with said results more a byproduct of how the sides each team faced played. Neither San Lorenzo or Lanus have pulled up any trees in 2018 and their matches are normally tedious watches.

With both parties under big pressure and low on confidence, we find them too hard to separate. Both managers know what’s at stake and cannot afford to lose the game, so we should see conservative approaches from both. Backing the draw looks the way to play and that’s exactly where our money is going. Lanus have remarkably drawn their last 7 Superliga Argentina matches and that’s a sequence that could well continue via a 0-0 stalemate.
