San Lorenzo vs Palmeiras Predictions

Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores group stage action sees Argentines San Lorenzo doing battle with Brazilians Palmeiras. The visitors arrive as big favourites to secure all 3 points.

San Lorenzo may be putting in one of the worst league campaigns in their history, but they’ve at least made a decent enough start to their Libertadores quest, first drawing away to Alianza Lima prior to beating 10 man Junior on home soil. As such, if they could win Tuesday’s game, they’d be in a very encouraging position but that’s something that certainly still feels easier said than done.

Indeed, El Ciclon don’t really appear a team set for a sustained run in the competition and still have big issues, evidenced by the fact they’re currently 22nd in the Superliga Argentina with just a single match left to play. They’re still yet to really click under boss Jorge Almiron and the fact they’ve only won 1 of their last 9 home games hardly leaves confidence high coming into Tuesday’s game.

Meanwhile, currently unbeaten in 12 matches, confidence certainly isn’t low in Palmeiras ranks and the reigning Serie A champions look as though they’ll be a force across all fronts in 2019. With a squad packed full of talent, Luiz Felipe Scolari’s troops are one of the favourites to lift the Libertadores and have got off to an excellent start, winning 2-0 at Junior prior to a 3-0 home win over Alianza Lima.

Though the Libertadores is famed for the difficulty its away games tend to bring, Palmeiras certainly haven’t struggled on the road in the competition in recent times, winning a highly impressive 6 of their last 7 away games. That leaves them assured of their ability to secure maximum points on Tuesday and there’s no doubting that they’re travelling to Buenos Aires targeting a win.

Ultimately, it’s one thing scraping results against Alianza Lima and Juniior and now up against one of the strongest teams on the continent, you do have to fear for San Lorenzo. They’ve looked a disjointed unit for well over a year now and as such, you can only see them struggling against a well oiled unit like Palmeiras.

All things considered, we really like the looking of backing an away win here and think Palmeiras will get the job done. San Lorenzo have been struggling against far lesser opponents and given Palmeiras’ impressive away record in the competition, they should be able to secure victory via a 1-0 margin.
