San Marino vs Czech Republic Predictions

San Marino had their best chance in a long time to get a win in February when they hosted fellow minnows Andorra in a friendly. It didn’t work out for them though as they lost 2-0, and they have since also been beaten at home by Moldova.

This extends their losing streak to 14 matches, with them scoring just one goal in this period and conceding 57 at the other end. Their last win came in 2014 in a hybrid friendly against Bellaria Igea. Competitively they have never won a match, losing all but three of their competitive games since 1990.

At home their last successful result was a goalless draw with Estonia in the Euro 2016 qualifiers, and their last competitive goal on home soil was all the way back in 2013 in a 5-1 loss to Poland.

Czech Republic have had a fairly poor 12 months to be honest. They were eliminated from Euro 2016 at the group stages after losing two of their three group games, and they haven’t been very impressive in the following World Cup qualifiers either.

They started that campaign with a goalless draw at home to Northern Ireland and followed that with defeat to Germany and a draw at home to Azerbaijan. They have since beaten Norway at home and they managed a 3-0 win over Lithuania in a friendly on Wednesday, but their lack of goals in competitive football is worrying.

These poor home results have left them 4th in their group, two points adrift of the surprisingly good Azerbaijan and already seven points off leaders Germany. It looks like they have tough competition from the likes of Northern Ireland for the 2nd place spot too.

Czech Republic are obviously huge favourites for this one, but in these situations the bookies tend to underestimate the minnows. The two times Czech Republic have visited San Marino the games have ended 3-0, and the hosts have limited their opponents to fewer than five goals in ten of their last 12 home games. The two times they conceded five or more they were playing England and Germany.

Considering this, odds of 4/6 for Czech Republic Under 4.5 Goals look excellent value, so I’m backing that alongside another 3-0 win for Czech Republic at 9/2 for my correct score predictions.
