Santos vs Sport Recife Predictions

Sunday’s Brazilian Serie A action sees Santos and Sport Recife doing battle in what is a crunch clash. Plenty of action is expected between two relegation rivals.

With this fixture marking the halfway point of the campaign, one thing is clear; Santos are in big trouble and must now accept they face a battle to avoid what would be an embarrassing relegation. Expectations weren’t particularly high coming into the year amongst financial issues but even the most pessimistic of supporter could not have seen their team sitting a point adrift of safety at this stage of the season.

Whilst they should have the quality to save themselves; Santos aren’t really showing much quality at the moment and the arrival of boss Cuca has not brought about an upturn in form. The hosts haven’t won any of their last 7 league games and although they played well to win in the cup mid-week away at Cruzeiro, they still managed to lose overall, crashing out after missing all three of their penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

Luckily for Santos, the side they face find themselves in just as wretched shape. Sport only avoided the drop by the skin of their teeth last season and look a weak proposition once again this year, currently sitting just 2 points above the relegation zone in 14th place.

The visitors have been absolutely dreadful over the last couple of months, taking just 2 points from 8 league games and for that reason, they arrive with a caretaker boss in charge after Claudinei Oliveira was sacked following a 3-1 home defeat to Sao Paulo last time out. With confidence low in away ranks, such an important match hasn’t come at the right time but those that take to the pitch will know they cannot afford to keep performing in the manner in which they are currently.

Ultimately, given the awful way in which each party is performing, both teams will surely view this fixture as a chance to finally secure 3 points and as such, we’re expecting an open game with both sides playing on the front foot.

That makes backing both nets to be hit an appealing way to play and our money will be going on that line. Both teams have found the net in both Santos and Sport’s last 3 outings and there’s no reason to believe either sequence is about to come to an end. Both teams have also scored in 4 of Santos’ last 6 home matches and as hard as a result is to call in the clash, we think Santos can edge it 2-1, given the opponent they face having lost 4 consecutive matches on enemy territory.
