      Scunthorpe vs Accrington Stanley Predictions

Scunny, who’ve dragged themselves away from the foot of the table in recent times, were beaten last time out, but that was their first defeat in seven games so they can be forgiven, especially since they went away from home and faced a very strong Barnsley outfit. Now back on their own patch, where they’re currently unbeaten in three, two of which they’ve won, the hosts will fancy themselves to bounce back.

Prior to their defeat at Oakwell last time out, Scunthorpe have been ticking along nicely. Their recent efforts haven’t been overly eye-catching, though they have seemingly re-found some defensive solidity and are now capable of getting seriously competitive in a game, which wasn’t the case earlier in the season.

However, if we look at their recent home efforts, it’s easy to say that Scunny could probably do with tightening up a bit more at the back. Saturday’s hosts have conceded in four of their last five at Glanford Park and have surrendered expected-goals against figures of 0.58, 1.44, 1.85, 1.95 and 2.09 during that time. We can see that they have steadily improved, though barring a decent display against Sunderland, Stuart McCall’s men remain reasonably easy to get at. Fortunately, their efforts going forward have been useful, particularly in their last two in front of a home crowd. A repeat of their attacking performance against the Black Cats would surely see the Iron do well against a slightly dodgy Accrington back-line.

Accrington will come into this game nice and fresh after their match last weekend was postponed, though they may not be feeling too confident given that they’ve won none of their last five in the league. Moreover, Stanley are without a win in three on the road and have now lost four of their last six travelling matches.

Much like Scunthorpe at home, Accrington have clear defensive issues on the road. They did keep a rare clean sheet in their last away match, but their overall defensive efforts away from home haven’t been great. Their last five expected-goals against figures read: 0.58, 1.97, 1.43, 2.85 and 2.41. Barring a decent effort against the Gills, John Coleman’s men have struggled to keep teams at bay on their travels, as the fact that they’ve surrendered an average of 1.64 expected goals suggests.

In truth, what with both having shown clear defensive weaknesses, this is a match that both teams are likely to view as winnable, so we ought to see a relatively open game unfold. Consider this alongside the numbers above and ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ stands out massively. With the pair having surrendered a combined average of 3.53 expected goals in their respective home and away games, punters could do worse than backing a handful of goals to arrive at Glanford Park on Saturday afternoon.
