Scunthorpe vs Derby Predictions

Derby County are looking for progress under Phillip Cocu, but can he match Frank Lampard’s achievements in the cups? While Lampard’s reign didn’t exactly take the Rams forward in the league, he got a few eye-catching results in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Lampard’s reign saw some big results against Premier League sides, but there’s a different task in prospect for Cocu here. He takes the Rams to Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night in the first round of the League Cup, but how will the Dutchman’s first cup game in English football go?

The hosts find themselves at the bottom of the EFL after two games, following back to back losses in League Two. The hosts have been beaten comfortably in both matches, going down 6-1 on aggregate from the opening two. That’s continued a terrible record in 2019 for the hosts, who were relegated from League One last term. Their start means they’ve failed to win their last 11 matches, which doesn’t look great ahead of this encounter with a second-tier side.

Derby have claimed four points from their opening two clashes, which has set up the Rams for a potential promotion bid once again. Odds have tumbled on them going up since they announced the upcoming arrival of Wayne Rooney. That’s put Derby among the frontrunners to go up, but we don’t expect that to distract from them making a strong tilt at the early rounds of the Carabao Cup. Their strong start this season has raised confidence, as they started off with a 2-1 win at Huddersfield which followed a high scoring pre-season where they scored nine times in four away friendlies.

Derby’s chances of going through look great on paper, with the hosts coming into this clash in terrible form. We can’t imagine there’s going to be much appetite for a cup clash at Glanford Park given their recent issues. Meanwhile, Derby went on trips to Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and St Mary’s in this competition last term and we’re expecting them to kick off another run in the Carabao Cup.

Not only have Scunthorpe conceded twice or more in both of their games this season, but they’ve shipped at least two goals in six of their last seven matches overall. That same form has hit them in the League Cup where they’ve shipped at least two goals in their previous four matches. Meanwhile, the Rams have scored two goals or more in their last five EFL Cup games, all of which have come on the road. That has us backing over 1.5 Derby goals in this clash on Tuesday.
