Scunthorpe vs Rotherham Predictions

Scunthorpe  come into this match having lost both home and away against Rotherham this season, though that small fact isn’t likely to bother them too much. Nick Daw’s men flew up the home straight with four wins from their final five matches, so they ought to be feeling confident.

The Iron have looked ultra-strong over the last few weeks; they’ve been very tough to breach, have been playing some eye-catching football and have offered a threat in the final third. The hosts will be very aware of the threat carried by Rotherham who, other than the top two, were the best team in the division this season, but they’ll still back themselves to hold firm in front of an expectant crowd at Glanford Park.

Rotherham will also approach this match feeling upbeat. Paul Warne’s men have gone toe-to-toe with most teams this season, while they’ll be able to draw on the positive experience of winning at this venue earlier in the campaign. Having seen his men beat an in-form Blackpool side at the weekend, Warne will expect a result in this first leg.

Like the other semi-final, here we have two teams who adopt contrasting styles. Scunthorpe are all about keeping things tight and being efficient, or at least that’s the style that has yielded them the most success, while Rotherham are more about dominance and imposing themselves on the game offensively. In truth, it’s not difficult to see either one winning out on Saturday afternoon, which is why there is hardly anything between the pair in the market.

With the way the betting is ahead of this match, neither side makes too much appeal. At the prices, the bet that does stand out is ‘Both Teams to Score’.

During the regular season, Scunthorpe weren’t quite as prolific as either of the top two, or Rotherham for that matter, though it wasn’t often that they failed to find the net, especially at home where they scored in 87% of their matches. What’s more, the Iron ended the season in fine scoring form, notching at least once in each of last ten matches. Against a Rotherham side who will come out and play as opposed to simply sitting back, Nick Daws’ side should have enough about them to score.

Rotherham did indeed fall into the category of prolific, as they scored an impressive 73 goals. Only the automatic promotion pair of Wigan and Blackburn scored more goals than the Millers during the regular season. Not only did they score lots of goals, but Paul Warne’s men scored regular goals. In fact, they only failed to score in 15% of their League One matches.

The visitors didn’t exactly end the season in imperious form, though it’s fair to say that they were probably holding plenty back for the play-offs. What’s more, the Millers have an excellent scoring record against their fellow play-off teams having notched home and away against Shrewsbury, Charlton and Scunthorpe.

Overall, in a match that could go either way, backing both Scunthorpe and Rotherham, both of whom rank highly in terms of both shots on target and goals scored in their respective home and away matches this season, to feature on the score-sheet makes plenty of sense at the prices.
