Seattle Sounders vs New York City Predictions

Seattle Sounders have been desperately short of goals so far this season, but have at least been making the ones they have managed of late count, with some fantastic defensive displays. Only New York RB have conceded fewer goals than Seattle Sounders this season, but Sunday’s hosts have scored just nineteen times, which is five fewer than the second lowest total held by Colorado Rapids. This weekend one of the MLS’s most potent attacking teams make the trip to Seattle in search of a fifth straight win in the league. However, both teams had midweek games to negotiate and Seattle have had an extra day to recuperate and prepare for the visitors of the Eastern Conference’s second placed side.

When the two clubs last locked horns in June 2017, hosts New York City came from behind to snatch a narrow victory. The first forty-five minutes was fairly tight and tense, with New York City seeing more of the ball but not really doing much with it. The deadlock was broken in the fortieth minute by Seattle’s Roldan against the run of play, and the visitors held that lead into the half time break. The hosts came out in the second forty-five with much more purpose and levelled the scorelines in the fifty-second minute via a David Villa spot kick. That same player proved to be the match winner in the seventy-seventh minute when the veteran Spanish striker showed his class after being set up by Harrison to make it 2-1 and claim all three points for the home side.

With five wins and one defeat from their last six matches it’s New York City who claim the title of form favourites heading into Sunday’s latest encounter with Seattle Sounders. The hosts have been in very good form themselves and are slowly working their way up the table following a run of three wins, two draws, and just a single defeat from their last six matches. We’re backing under 2.5 goals to be scored on Sunday when two of the MLS’s best defences go head to head, because four of Seattle’s and three of New York City’s last six games have seen fewer than three goals scored. Seattle have kept three clean sheets in their last four matches, while New York City haven’t conceded a single goal in their last four.

The hosts goal scoring problems are clear to see, with Bruin Seattle’s top scorer in the league this season with five goals. Injury to David Villa has allowed Tajouri to go joint top scorer with the Spaniard on eight league goals for the season, and if the former Barcelona striker misses out again this weekend it will only boast Seattle’s confidence.

We’re confident that under 2.5 goals will be scored in this game as Seattle have a great defensive record, but are poor going forward, and New York could be without their best striker through injury. In terms of a final score, we’re backing this game to end goalless as all the signs point to both defences coming out on top this weekend.

Seattle Sounders’ Predicted Lineup: Frei, Torres, Ki-Hee, McCrary, Tol, Svensson, Alonso, Lodeiro, Shipp, Roldan, Ruidíaz.

New York City’s Predicted Lineup: Johnson, Tinnerholm, Callens, Chanot, Sweat, Moralez, Wallace, Ring, McNamara, Medina, Ofori.
