Sheffield Wednesday vs Preston Predictions

  • Preston are without victory in seven league games
  • Preston have failed to score in three of their last four away league games, with their last three road defeats finishing 2-0
  • Sheffield Wednesday have won their last three Championship home meetings with Preston

Wednesday can return to winning ways

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered consecutive league defeats against West Brom and Swansea but they can capitalise on Preston’s misfortunes at Hillsborough.

Despite losing, Wednesday were not disgraced in either of those two defeats and a Preston side short on belief and lacking a cutting edge don’t carry the same threat as the Baggies or the Swans.

Prior to that, the Owls had won 2-1 at Bristol City and held promotion-chasing visitors Nottingham Forest to a 1-1 draw and manager Gary Rowett is adamant their four performances since football’s resumption has merited more than just the four points they have collected.

Injuries have hampered Wednesday this season but they are finishing the season with what is close to a fully-fit squad and home draws with Fulham and Leeds and victory over Brentford show what they are capable of when everything clicks into place.

Wednesday have won their last three Championship home meetings with Preston and look value to make it a fourth.

Preston’s troubles look set to continue

Preston are without victory in seven league games and their hopes of locking down a playoff place have become a distant memory.

Since the Championship’s return, The Lilywhites have been held to draws at relegation-threatened pair Luton and Huddersfield and lost at home to Cardiff and Derby and there is evidently a lack of scoring threat in their ranks.

Preston, who failed to register a shot on target in the draw goalless draw at Huddersfield, have now failed to score in three of their last four away assignments.

In fact, Preston have netted only five times in their last nine contests and attackers Tom Barkhuizen, Daniel Johnson and Josh Harrop are failing to match their performances from earlier on in the campaign.

Alex Neil’s men have won only five of their 20 away league matches this season and they are unlikely to enjoy much celebration on their trip to Yorkshire.

A flurry of goals unlikely at Hillsborough

One or both teams have failed to score in seven of Sheffield Wednesday’s last nine home games, while both-teams-to-score-backers have been rewarded in only two of Preston’s last seven games on the road.

With that in mind, we are predicting a low-scoring match with Wednesday fancied to prevail. The Sheffield side won this home fixture to nil last season and could repeat the trick.

Preston have failed to score in three of their last four away league games, with their last three road defeats finishing 2-0, and our prediction is a repeat scoreline.
