Shrewsbury vs AFC Wimbledon Predictions

At the start of the month, Shrewsbury appeared to be moving in the wrong direction; they’d lost three on the bounce and had slipped to an unflattering league position. However, Sam Ricketts’ men have turned things around recently, as they’ve gone four games without tasting defeat and have won each of their last two. After defeating play-off chasers Doncaster in the week, the Shrews will come into this fixture feeling confident.

As they created far less than their opponents, Shrewsbury’s performance on Tuesday evening was something of a smash and grab, but they got the job done, which is the main thing when trying to pull clear of the relegation zone, while it’s not as if the Shrews have made a habit of giving lots away.

Prior to their mid-week win over Doncaster, the Shrews had been ticking along nicely, both in terms of results and performances. They certainly weren’t blowing teams away, but they were keeping games nice and tight and were consistently creating that little bit more than they gave away, which wasn’t a lot.

Moreover, barring the odd slip-up, Shrewsbury have been a tough nut to crack at home this season. Ricketts’ men have lost just two of their last ten at New Meadow. They’ve kept four clean sheets during that time and have bettered their opponents in terms of expected goals in six of those ten. They’ve also conceded an average of just 1.06 goals at home this season and have surrendered an average of 1.12 expected goals. Their average expected goal difference of +0.35 is also reasonably pleasing.

Given their numbers at home, coupled with their recent good form, it’s not overly difficult to view this match against lowly AFC Wimbledon as an excellent opportunity for the Shrews to continue moving in the right direction, though when we consider the fact that Wimbledon have done relatively well on the road of late, it’s also relatively easy to feel that the visitors can compete on Saturday afternoon.

In their last away match, Wimbledon fought hard and deservedly beat Rochdale, as their expected goal difference of +1.42 suggests, while they also delivered a pleasing performance to beat Walsall on the road prior to that, again posting an encouraging expected goal difference of +1.44. Both of those performances proved that Wally Downes’ men aren’t exiting this division without putting up a fight.

In fact, despite their poor league position, Wimbledon have never really been easy to beat on their travels this season. The Dons currently have a positive expected goal difference away from home and have only created marginally less than Shrewsbury have at home, while they’ve only lost by more than a single goal in 4/17 on the road during the current campaign.

Going against the hosts won’t be easy for lots of people, but all things considered, backing the visitors to gain a positive result is not hard to do, especially at the prices. For all they’re in a poor position, Wimbledon are no easy side to get the better of, while for all Shrewsbury are a good side, they’re not the most menacing going forward, so the visitors will fancy themselves to stay in the game.

All things considered, Wimbledon’s away-day efforts just aren’t far enough away from Shrewsbury’s at home to merit such a disparity in prices. On this basis, we can conclude that backing ‘Wimbledon Draw No Bet’ is an option that offers punters a nice piece of value.
