Shrewsbury vs Charlton Predictions

Shrewsbury remain a side that is tough to beat; they’ve lost just one of their last four matches inside 90 minutes, though they’ve now failed to win any of their last five. Back on their own patch, where they recently drew with Championship side Stoke in the FA Cup, Sam Rickett’s men will be hoping to regain the winning thread.

It’s a shame that the Shrews didn’t get a better start to the season, as Shrewsbury really are one of the most solid sides in the division. Very few teams get an easy ride against the Shropshire outfit. A more potent forward-line would be beneficial, but from a defensive point of view, Sam Rickett’s men are very strong. Not only are they good at resisting teams, but they’re good at preventing teams from building up a head of steam. No team in League One has conceded fewer expected goals than Shrewsbury during the current campaign.

All round, the Shrews are useful, but they’re particularly tough to face at New Meadow. In front of a home crowd, Saturday’s hosts have lost just twice during the current campaign, while they’re now unbeaten at six on their own patch. In terms of expected goals, they’ve bettered their opponents in five of those six, while they boast an average of 1.54 expected goals for at home and an average of just 0.87 against.

Charlton are also a very good side. They too are tough to get at, though their defensive efforts on the road have been less impressive than Shrewsbury’s at New Meadow. The Addicks were easily beaten by Barnsley last time out on the road and while they did beat Portsmouth prior to that, they didn’t exactly do so on merit.

Lee Bowyer has decent forward players at his disposal; Charlton can make things happen and they’ve scored in each of their last six away matches, but they’ve got a habit of giving more away than they create when playing away, which is not something that Shrewsbury do at home. Charlton have surrendered an average of 1.69 expected goals away from home, while they’ve been outperformed by their opponents in that respect in each of their last five travelling games.

At the prices, Shrewsbury look a good bet to regain the winning thread on Saturday. The hosts look stronger at the back than Charlton, while they ought to be suited by the way that Charlton are likely to try and play on the front foot. Punters can profit by backing the sturdy hosts to grind out the win at what appears to be a slightly generous price.
