Southampton vs Burnley Predictions

  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in four of Southampton’s last five league games.
  • Burnley and Southampton have scored just ten goals in 16 combined matches this season.
  • Southampton won both meetings with Burnley last season.

Saints kickstart season

Southampton’s wait for their first Premier League win of the season finally came to an end last weekend as they beat Leeds courtesy of an Armando Broja goal and it could be a similar outcome when they face the struggling Burnley on Saturday.

It may have been the Saints first win of the season but that’s not to say they haven’t been playing well. They have picked up points against both Manchester clubs and West Ham so far this term and the future does look fairly bright for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side if they can keep this level of performance up.

Clarets winless run continues

The same can’t be said for Burnley, who remain without a league win this season after last weekend’s loss at the Etihad. That being said, their 2-0 loss to Manchester City was a major improvement over their recent trips to the blue side of Manchester, although that’s not saying much.

Still, Sean Dyche’s side look destined for a relegation battle this season after collecting just three points in eight games so far, with two of those coming against other sides yet to win a game this term.

Goals in short supply at St Mary’s

Goalscoring, as always, is the major problem for Burnley. The Clarets have managed just four league goals all season and three of their last four outings have produced fewer than three goals.

Southampton aren’t exactly renowned for their free-scoring ways this season, either, netting just six goals in eight games and seeing four of their last five outings go under the 2.5 goal line, making that my preferred bet of the afternoon.

I do expect the Saints to build on their win last weekend and given they are facing a goalshy Burnley and have picked up three clean sheets in their last five games a 1-0 correct score prediction appeals.

Southampton predicted lineup: McCarthy; Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud; Elyounoussi, Romeu, Diallo, Djenepo; Redmond, Broja

Burnley predicted lineup: Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Collins, Taylor; McNeil, Westwood, Brownhill, Cornet; Rodriguez, Wood

  • Burnley have failed to score in three of their last four league matches
  • Southampton have won the last two Premier League meetings with Burnley by the odd goal
