Spain Women vs South Africa Women Predictions

Unlike their male counterparts, Spain’s women have had limited success; they’ve never got as far as the semi-finals at a World Cup, while they’ve only reached the semi finals once at the European Championships. That said, they’ll fancy themselves to beat South Africa first time out at this tournament.

As they come into the tournament as 25/1 shots, Spain aren’t one of the favourites to go all the way in France this summer, though they’re red-hot favourites to get the better of South Africa on match-day one. For all they’ve won just two of their last five fixtures, the Spanish women have tussled with some of the world’s best teams during that time, which bodes well ahead of a game against a lowly South Africa side that has struggled against top opposition in recent times.

Last time out, Spain battled hard to draw 1-1 with the Japanese, who’re currently ranked 7th, while Jorge Vilda’s side also held Canada, who’re currently ranked 5th, to a draw before that. On both of those occasions, the Spanish showed that they’ve got what it takes to go the distance with strong opposition, while they proved their goal-scoring credentials when scoring four against Cameroon less than a month ago.

If we go back slightly further, we can see that Spain have generally made light work of scoring goals against the lesser sides; they notched three against both Poland and Serbia in qualifying, while they also scored four against Finland prior to that. Such form is promising given the defensive instability of the South Africans, who conceded seven against Norway just a few days ago.

South Africa’s preparations for what will be their first ever World Cup certainly haven’t gone to plan. Back in May, they failed to land a glove on USA, who sauntered to a 3-0 win against Banyana Banyana, while Desiree Ellis’s women shipped no less than seven goals on route to losing against Norway last time out.

If we also consider the fact that a side like Finland, who lost 4-0 to Spain not that long ago, beat South Africa by three goals to nil back in March, it becomes very easy to envisage the Spanish running riot.

When the contrasting teams meet in Le Havre on Saturday evening, punters can profit by backing ‘Spain to Score Over 2.5 Goals’, while ‘Spain to Score Over 3.5 Goals’ is also worth a nibble. While the Spanish have proven their goal-scoring credentials against weak defences over the last 12 months or so, South Africa have recently shown that they lack any sort of defensive solidity.
