Spartak Subotica vs Brondby Predictions

Brondby are strong favourites to win this Thursday’s UEFA Europa League against Spartak Subotica. The Danish side will be targeting an advantage to take the pressure off the 2nd Leg and will have one eye on a potential meeting with either Genk or Lech Poznan in the play-off round.

Spartak Subotica have had a decent run in this competition already though and they will take confidence into this game. They made a slow start to what is only their second ever European campaign and needed a last minute equaliser to rescue a home draw against Coleraine in the 1st Qualifying Round. However they won the away leg and then stunned Sparta Prague in the next round with an impressive 2-0 home win setting up a 3-2 aggregate success.

Brondby meanwhile have received a bye until this stage following on from their 2nd place finish in the Danish league last term. Only a late season collapse prevented them from winning the title but to their credit they have made a bright start to this term, with 10 points from their opening 4 games ensuring they are in top spot again.

They’ve not really faced any of the top sides yet in Denmark though and a trip to the more hostile surroundings of Serbia will provide a test of their character as much as anything. They don’t have many recent happy memories in Europe and have played in this competition 8 times over the last decade without ever progressing as far as the group stage. They were sent packing at this stage in this part of the world 12 months ago when they lost 2-0 on aggregate to Hadjuk Split of Croatia and they’ve lost all of their last four away European matches.

Therefore they do look a bit short at around 8/15 for the win here. Spartak were hammered 4-0 at home in their league at the weekend but they rested virtually their entire first eleven for that match, which is testament to just how seriously they are taking this competition and this tie.

Having seen off Sparta Prague they have no reason to fear Brondby and the Danish side’s poor recent record in Europe, particularly away from home, suggests backing Spartak Subotica Double Chance could be the way to go here. A draw wouldn’t be a disaster for the visitors in truth who will fancy they will be able to win the home leg next week in more familiar surroundings.
