Spartak Subotica vs Coleraine Predictions

Coleraine return to Europe this season hoping to make progress but it will be a tough ask against Serbian side Spartak Subotica. The Northern Irish side will be aiming to at least stay in the tie and give themselves a chance heading into the return clash next week.

History certainly suggests they will find this very tough. Their record in Europe is abysmal and they’ve never progressed from a two-legged tie. Indeed they’ve only ever won one match in a European competition, a 2-1 home victory against Leiria of Portugal in 2004 but they still lost the away leg 5-0.

They returned to Europe last season and things followed a similar pattern again. They were hammered 7-0 away to Haugesund before getting a creditable 0-0 draw in the home 2nd Leg. While Spartak Subotica are a bit more of an unknown quantity, it could again prove to be a damage limitation job.

This is a big occasion for the hosts who are playing in Europe for just the second time in their history. They won both home matches in 2010 when they also played in the Europa League and they are likely to benefit from strong home support here with Serbian crowds known for their hostility and that should only make life tougher for the Northern Irish side.

Overall, it’s hard to look past a pretty comfortable home win. Spartak ended last season strongly, winning their final five home matches in the Serbian top flight. They scored in the opening 15 minutes in 3 of those games and are clearly a side that likes to come flying out the blocks and will be hungry to stamp their authority on this tie early doors.

Northern Irish sides have found European football very tough in recent years and it’s hard to see Coleraine changing that pattern here. All three Northern Irish clubs exited at the 1st Qualifying Round stage last season with convincing away defeats to nil and although Coleraine have improved over the past 12 months, it’s hard to give them much hope in the away leg at least.

Overall backing Spartak Subotica HT/Spartak Subotica FT could be the best move here, with the Serbs rightfully the clear favourites to win this.

Meanwhile backing Spartak Subotica to Win 3-0 looks good in the Correct Score market, with the gulf in quality likely to be evident over 90 minutes.
