Spartans vs Kilmarnock Predictions

These two are locked in a tight fight for a place in the next round of the Scottish League Cup. Spartans may be bottom of the pile, but they are just three points off leaders Dumbarton. Can they close that gap with a surprise victory this week? With the group stage set to end at the weekend, time is running out to secure  a place in the last 16. With five teams in the mix and just one set to go through to the next round, the stakes are high ahead of this clash on Tuesday night.

Kilmarnock finished on a high last season, moving in to fifth place after some great form under Steve Clarke. They made a late push for Europe, while they made progress in the Scottish Cup. They would have seen this competition as a chance for a cup run, and potentially silverware. However, that form hasn’t stuck with them this time around. They’ve made a mixed start to the new campaign, kicking things off with a 0-0 draw against St Mirren.

However, Killie did manage to pick things up in the second game, as they claimed a 4-2 win at Dumbarton to strengthen their position in the group. They are just a point shy of Dumbarton, and a win on Tuesday will put them top of the group ahead of the final game. They need to pick up where they left off, while they’ve got to watch out against a Spartans side who have impressed in their first group stage campaign in this competition. They may not have won a game, but they have secured two draws, including one at St Mirren.

They scored twice in that clash with Premiership opposition, and they’re certainly capable of causing problems in this clash. They have scored in back to back League Cup matches, and that’s a run they’ll look to continue in their final match. Will they give Killie a scare in this trip? The visitors have managed just one clean sheet in their last six away matches in this competition, so we don’t see them holding up all that well at the back.

Fresh from a high scoring win at Dumbarton, we see Killie getting a similar result here. We’re backing Spartans to score in this clash, but Killie’s away form in this competition should give them confidence. They’ve come out on top in seven of their last nine away games in this competition, so we’re backing an away win yet again. The away side are heavy favourites to secure a win, so we’re backing Kilmarnock to win and both teams to score, along with a 3-1 victory.
