Sporting Lisbon vs Chaves Predictions
- Sporting Lisbon have won 13 of their last 15 home Primeira Liga games, the last three of which featured at least three goals.
- Sporting Lisbon bounced back from their last big defeat with a 3-0 home win.
- Chaves have scored in their last nine head-to-head league meetings with Sporting.
Lions may be losing appetite for clean sheets
Sporting have the mindset to bounce back from their Primeira Liga setback to Porto with a defiant win over Chaves on Saturday, but they cannot be totally trusted to shut out their newly-promoted opponents. Ruben Amorim’s side were given a 3-0 chasing by the champions at the Dragao to make it six goals conceded in their opening three matches of the campaign.
That is as many league goals as they shipped over the course of the first 15 and a half league games of the 2021-22 campaign and suggests the Lions are losing their appetite for clean sheets.
Amorim has more or less the same defenders to work with this term, but two key midfielders have left for the Premier League and the balance of the team may not be right at the moment. The coach’s post-match answers to questions over Sporting’s muddled transfer thinking suggest he isn’t fully happy or settled about the situation either and could affect the squad.
Sporting should bounce back with a win
Chaves sit in ninth place in the table with four points after their 1-1 home draw with Vizela last week. They started brightly but failed to kill off the visitors and paid the price later as both teams finished with ten men.
Vitor Campelos’ side might be able to grab a goal at the Alvalade and make things interesting on Saturday night. Chaves have scored in two of their three Primeira Liga outings so far and 11 of their last 14 competitive away games.
But Sporting should still pick up the win and they did bounce back from their 5-0 home humiliation at the hands of Manchester City last spring with a handsome home victory over Estoril. Whether Chaves’ proud history of scoring against the Lions is of any relevance or not, Sporting have kept only one clean sheet in their last nine games – including friendlies so a 3-1 full-time prediction has a solid chance.
