St. Gallen vs FC Sion Predictions

With leagues around Europe still preparing for the start of their seasons, one which already got underway last weekend was the Swiss Super League. Moving swiftly into it’s second stanza, this Sunday sees St Gallen welcome Sion to the AFG Arena and with both sides looking to make a strong start to the new campaign, it promises to be an entertaining afternoon just south of the Lake Constance.

Despite a strong start to the campaign last season for St Gallen, the last few games were a time to forget as they lost form completely and fell outside of the European qualification spots. To give you an idea of just how poor that turnaround in form was, they lost the final seven games of the season and still managed to finish within four points of FC Zurich, who clinched the final European qualification spot in fourth place. However, their form through pre-season has allowed them to rebuild their confidence and the opening days 2-1 victory over Sarpsborg 08 shows that they may just have some of the momentum back from the start of the previous campaign.

FC Sion, on the other hand, have almost the complete opposite story to tell. They finished the last season in pretty strong shape with three victories in a row and although they were not in the running for European qualification, they finished just one spot behind Sunday’s hosts. They have enjoyed a pretty solid pre-season campaign but an opening day defeat leaves plenty for them to do if they are going to keep up with the early pace setters.

A look at the head to head record between these two sides is a major reason in tipping both teams to score as it is something which has occurred in 10 of the previous 11 meetings between the two sides. To add a little more emphasis on just how impressive that stat is, it means 91% of their previous 11 clashes have finished up this way.

Added to this is the fact that the hosts may have started with a little more confidence, but their defensive frailties which dogged the latter part of their campaign are still there for all to see. This, coupled with the fact that the visitors have conceded two goals in three of their previous four outings means we are pretty confident there will be at least one goal at each end.
