St. Gallen vs Luzern Predictions

Luzern finished one place above St. Gallen last season courtesy of goal difference, with Saturday’s guests winning each of the two league games between the pair and, as a result, the visitors qualified for European football while their hosts didn’t.

Pre-season has gone very well for St. Gallen who drew with the likes of Celtic and Sporting CP whilst beating Thun and Bochum on their way to an unbeaten run, but the real test arrives on Saturday when they face a Luzern side that they haven’t been able to beat for a long time. Luzern lost against Winterthur, Crystal Palace, and Eintracht Frankfurt in pre-season but did manage to hold Rheindorf Altach to a draw and beat Aarau 3-0.

The recent head to head record between these two clubs points strongly to a win for Luzern this weekend, but the performances of both teams during pre-season suggests a double chance bet on the visitors makes for a safer bet. Luzern have won their last nine matches against St. Gallen and four of the last six meetings between the two clubs have seen both teams score. St. Gallen are undefeated in their last six matches, which will be a concern for the visitors. Three of Luzern’s last five and four of St. Gallen’s last six matches have seen both teams score, and we’re backing Luzern to claim a 2-1 win over their hosts this weekend.

Majeed Ashimeru top-scored for St. Gallen last season with seven league goals and the club have retained his services for another year, while Pascal Schürpf scored nine Super League goals for Luzern last season and teammate Christian Schneuwly chipped in with eight and both remain at the club heading into the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

We’re confident that a double chance bet on Luzern will payout this weekend and have even predicted a final scoreline of 2-1 to the visitors. St. Gallen are unbeaten in their last six matches which is a concern and the main reason we haven’t backed an outright win for the visitors this weekend, but Luzern have won their last eight matches against their hosts and finished above them last season so we are confident the visitors will take home at least a point from their first match of the new season.
