Goodwin will leave the shackles off against former club

Jim Goodwin takes his Aberdeen side to former club St. Mirren on Saturday looking to return the third-placed Dons to winning ways after back-to-back defeats against the Old Firm. Goodwin let the shackles off his young team at Pittodrie on Tuesday after narrowly failing to contain leaders Celtic there a few days before, but the result was much the same as Rangers edged a thriller 3-2 with a late winner.

Goodwin had said he didn’t particularly enjoy setting his team up to contain the champions last Saturday even though they came within a few minutes of holding on for a point. They had a proper go at Rangers in midweek and scored twice, both efforts coming from outside the box, and led 2-1 when the game entered stoppage time.

Aberdeen should have a slight edge in terms of match sharpness for this clash at the SMISA Stadium because the Buddies have not played competitively since mid-November. Their weekend clash with Motherwell was called off because of a frozen pitch.

Both teams to score the best way in

Stephen Robinson’s men play a counter-attacking style that has brought in a steady stream of points at home, but precious few on their travels. Their home form, which is only bettered by the two Old Firm clubs, makes it hard to oppose them here with any conviction.

The best way in may be to back both teams to score, which has landed in four of the Buddies’ last five home contests and an even greater proportion of the Dons’ away league fixtures since the start of September. It finished 4-1 to Aberdeen when these two sides met at Pittodrie earlier this season.

A 1-1 draw is forecast for correct score backers as St.Mirren average 1.22 goals per game in Paisley this term, conceding more than a goal on only one occasion. Aberdeen, meanwhile, have scored exactly one goal in five of their last seven road games.
