Strasbourg vs Angers Predictions

  • Both teams scored in all but one of Strasbourg’s last ten Ligue 1 matches in 2020/21.
  • The hosts’ final five outings at Stade de la Meinau last term produced 17 goals in total.

Entertaining clash anticipated in Alsace

Recent encounters between Strasbourg and Angers have been tight affairs but we could well see a more open contest when the sides meet on the opening day of the season at Stade de la Meinau this Sunday.

Both sides begin the new campaign under new management with Julian Stephan taking over from Thierry Laurey at Strasbourg and Gerard Baticle replacing the outgoing Stephane Moulin at Angers, making it difficult in many respects to know what’s coming from the teams this weekend.

Our anticipation of an entertaining game is driven mainly by the hosts, whose approach changed markedly towards the end of last term. Strasbourg’s fixtures became increasingly open and both teams scored in all but one of their last ten outings, with their final five starts at Stade de la Meinau producing 17 goals.

The Alsace outfit have managed to hold onto giant centre-forward Ludovic Ajorque who fired 16 goals last season and his talents should be well complemented by the incoming Kevin Gameiro from Valencia, who represents quite a coup for Strasbourg despite his advancing years.

Strasbourg have, however, lost promising centre back Mohamed Simakan to RB Leipzig, while experienced stopper Stefan Mitrovic has left for Getafe. That pair don’t appear to have been well replaced, so the goals could well by flying in again for Strasbourg at both ends of the field this term.

Both teams to score certainly looks the right wager here at around evens, with the 1X2 market best avoided. Just two points separated these teams who finished 13th and 15th respectively last season and we think they’ll fight out a 2-2 draw in Alsace this Sunday.
