Switzerland vs Republic Of Ireland Predictions

Two sides who dropped points on Saturday are now going head to head for a place at Euro 2020. Both Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland are in a three-way fight with Denmark for a top-two finish in this campaign. As it stands, the Danes and Irish are clear on 12 points, while Switzerland are second, four points back with a game in hand. It’s incredibly tight, especially with two of the three meeting here.

Switzerland became the first of the trio to lose a game in this campaign on Saturday. They were beaten 1-0 at Denmark, a result which knocked the Irish off the top of the group. The hosts are tournament regulars, having qualified for seven of the last eight since Euro 2004. They don’t tend to do a lot at the finals, but they are usually there. Will that consistency continue with a victory on Tuesday?

The visitors picked up a 0-0 draw at Georgia on Saturday, a point gained or a major missed opportunity. depending on who you listened to. Manager Mick McCarthy stressed that it was a good result, but their midweek opponents won 2-0 in their visit to Georgia back in March. In a group as tight as this, you have to match your opponents practically every step of the way.

We’ve seen an incredibly tight group so far, with five draws between these sides. That includes a 1-1 draw between the pair in Dublin, the third draw in four meetings between these two sides. That result continued the visitors’ unbeaten run in this group, which has seen them avoid defeat under McCarthy so far. With a strong defensive display against Georgia, they’ll expect to keep that run up this week.

The Irish have lost two of their last 19 qualifiers, form which took them to the playoffs for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. They have put together some impressive away form, with a 10-game unbeaten run in away qualifiers backing them up going into this clash. While Martin O’Neill’s side fell apart with some dismal Nations League results, this side has been grinding out qualifying points for a long time.

Switzerland’s only win in four in this group came against Gibraltar, while they have won once in their last six matches in all competitions. The Swiss drew three of those, while we expect another draw here. We’re backing the draw as our prediction here, while our final score tip is a repeat of the 1-1 draw in Dublin.
