The New Saints vs Midtjylland Predictions

This will be a really stern test for Welsh champions TNS as they take on another side to have dropped out of the Champions League in the shape of Midtjylland of Denmark this Thursday. The visitors are strong favourites with the bookies and will be firmly expected to progress to the Europa League Play-Off Round where they would play the loser of the Champions League tie between Malmo and MOL Vidi of Hungary.

The New Saints will know an upset is unlikely but it has already been quite a European adventure for a side of limited pedigree on the continent. This is only the second time they’ve played three European ties in the same season and they nearly pulled off one of the great European comebacks against Shkendija in Champions League qualifying.

5-0 down from the 1st Leg, they won 4-0 at home to record their joint largest ever European win. They still narrowly missed out though and only narrowly beat Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar in the last round of this competition and that tie offered a reminder that they are a relatively limited side and one that should be brushed aside by a professional outfit such as Midtjylland.

The Danes also exited the Champions League in agonising fashion. They’d have been relatively content, despite losing 2-1 away to Astana in the 1st Leg of their 2nd Qualifying Round tie but couldn’t muster up the goal that would have seen them through in a goalless 2nd Leg. They will now be firmly targeting a place in the group stage of this competition and they did show their class last season in Denmark where they won a thrilling title race seeing off rivals Brondby and Copenhagen.

They’ve not made a brilliant start to their defence but 7 points from 4 games is no disaster, given they’ve had other distractions. They appear to be just finding their stride again though, with 3-1 wins in their last two league games. Their matches have been fairly entertaining too with 4 of their last 5 producing over 2.5 goals and you sense they will be keen to take the game to TNS here and try to work up a big enough advantage that will enable them to rest players in the 2nd Leg.

TNS matches in Europe also tend to produce goals, with all of their last eight producing at least two or more. 6 of those featured three or more and a repeat would be no surprise here. The visitors are comfortably the better team though and playing in Cardiff rather than on a small, tight ground should help them. They should have no trouble sealing a 1st Leg advantage, so backing Midtjylland & Over 2.5 Goals looks to offer value.
