Talleres De Cordoba vs Sao Paulo Predictions

Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores second round qualification, first leg clash sees Argentines Talleres de Cordoba doing battle with Brazilians Sao Paulo. The hosts will be looking to edge ahead in the tie ahead of a very difficult return fixture.

It’s sure to be a special night at the Mario Alberto Kempes, as Talleres make their return to the Libertadores stage for the first time since their only ever appearance back in 2002. It’s certainly not been an easy life for a Talleres fan over the last decade and a half, with the side spending two spells in the third tier and numerous seasons in the second division, but Wednesday’s clash will mark the peak of their upwards trajectory over the last couple of years.

Domestically, Talleres are running along in solid, if unspectacular fashion, currently stationed in 12th of the Superliga Argentina. Boss Juan Pablo Vojvoda had come under pressure at the start of the campaign but now looks far more settled and Talleres have looked an impressive unit in 2019 so far, recording friendly victories over San Martin de Tucuman and arch enemy Belgrano prior to securing a solid point at Independiente and beating Banfield in league action.

Meanwhile, Sao Paulo are back in the competition for the first time since 2016 and having won the Libertadores on 3 occasions, their name carries huge weight within it. Tricolor finished 5th in Serie A last season to ensure their return and looked a fairly strong outfit but they’ve not been entirely convincing in 2019 so far.

Indeed, improvement needs to be found swiftly if the visitors are to avoid an early exit from the Libertadores. Boss André Jardine is finding it difficult to settle into his first ever management role at senior level and Sao Paulo have now lost 4 of the 7 matches they’ve contested this year, falling to friendly defeats to Frankfurt and Ajax, as well as Santos and lower league Guarani in the Campeonato Paulista.

Ultimately, although Talleres are the underdogs in this tie over two legs, they’ll certainly fancy their chances, particularly in this home leg. There’s an air of vulnerability around Sao Paulo at the minute and the only games they’ve won in the action we’ve seen so far this year have been up against vastly inferior opposition; something Talleres are certainly not.

All things considered, we like the price available on a home win in this clash and fancy Talleres’ chances of edging ahead. Up against a bumper home crowd, it’ll not be an easy night for Sao Paulo and having not won any of their last 8 Copa Libertadores away games, they’ve not been strong historically on the road in the competition. Talleres have greater momentum behind them, have been the more convincing in recent weeks and are typically fairly strong at thome and that leads us to believe they’ll win the match 1-0.
