Telstar vs Cambuur Leeuwarden Predictions

With five wins and a draw from their last six outings, Telstar are one of the form teams in Eerste Divisie at the moment and they have given themselves an outside chance of reaching the Play-offs following Monday’s fine 2-3 success against 3rd placed Go Ahead Eagles. Mike Snoei’s side are now just six points behind 9th placed Cambuur who they take on at IJmuiden Stadion this Friday, so it’s clear that there is plenty at stake here for both teams on match day 33.

After rattling off victories against three teams in the bottom four and toppling a toiling Den Bosch side in recent weeks, it was quite easy to pick holes in Telstar’s form ahead of their clash away to Go Ahead on Monday; however the IJmuiden outfit proved at De Adelaarshorst that their recent upturn in results has been no fluke.

Go Ahead had won nine of their previous 15 home games this term but Telstar had them on the rack from the off in Deventer after Mendes Moreira scored in the first minute, and although Eagles equalised through Jaroslav Navratil ten minutes later, Telstar continued to look the better side and hit the front again just after the hour mark.

Their lead lasted just five minutes as Thomas Verheydt levelled matters once more via the penalty spot, but Telstar found a crucial winner in stoppage time through Dylan Mertens to bank what is easily their most important result of the campaign to date.

It moves them up to 15th and just six points behind the Play-off spots, and Mike Snoei’s charges will now be realistically aiming for a place in the top nine with six games of the regular season remaining.

Telstar have to win again this Friday to maintain their momentum, and attaining another three points here is even more vital has Cambuur currently hold that all important 9th place.

This will be far from easy for the hosts though – Cambuur have won the last six meetings between the pair including a cosy 2-0 success in Leeuwarden back in September.

Rene Hake’s charges are in equally good nick after winning four of their last five league matches and they head to IJmuiden this Friday on the back of a crushing 0-6 win away to Jong Ajax on Monday, as Nigel Robertha, Sam Hendriks and Matt Steenvoorden all notched double salvos against the defending champions.

That result marked Cambuur’s third consecutive victory and clean sheet on the road following wins against RKC (0-2) and Volendam (0-1) in March, so the visitors will clearly fancy their chances on match day 33 despite Telstar’s recent exploits.

It’s certainly not easy to oppose the hosts here, but the majority of Telstar’s good work has been on their travels and they could well be feeling the effects of Monday’s heroics.

Cambuur’s head to head dominance and terrific recent away form counts for plenty, and they should be comparatively fresh after what seemed like a training exercise in Amsterdam against Jong Ajax.

So although there shouldn’t be too much between the teams, we’re siding with Cambuur in this one at odds-against and also backing a 1-2 correct score in the visitors’ favour.
