Trakai vs Cefn Druids Predictions

Trakai went to Wales last week as favourites to beat Cefn Druids, but it seems like their league form played a part in their European struggles. These two sides are meeting in the preliminary round of the Europa League qualifiers, as they dream of a summer run through to the group stage, to meet some of Europe’s biggest teams. While it’s hard to see them lining up with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea next season, the pair will each want some European success in the very first hurdle in the qualifying campaign.

The Welsh side are playing just their fourth ever European game this week, and they got this tie off to a strong start. While they couldn’t play at their own ground due to UEFA restrictions, they still managed to make Trakai feel uncomfortable in their trip, and they pulled off a 1-1 draw. They now need a big result in the second leg, and Cefn Druids are likely to need a goal in order to qualify for the next round. However, could they have an opportunity for a shock here?

Trakai triumphed against St Johnstone of the Scottish Premiership a year ago, winning home and away to progress. That made their return to Britain look like a formality, but the Lithuanian side have struggled domestically this term. They’ve slumped to fourth in the league overall, and their hopes of making it in to the Europa League next summer are looking thin. Based on their recent results, they could be set for more problems in Europe on Thursday.

The hosts have now failed to win their last four matches, after a 3-0 cup defeat to Suduva. They’ve won twice since the start of May, a run which has spread across 11 matches. While their European experience makes them heavy favourites to beat Cefn Druids, there’s certainly a defensive weakness to exploit for the Welsh side. They meet a Trakai team who have conceded 58% of their league goals at home this term, keeping a clean sheet in just 22% of their home matches, and letting in 1.22 goals per game.

Given that the hosts have kept one clean sheet in nine Europa League games, we see them conceding. While they’ve won three of their last four at home in this competition, they’ve conceded in three of those. Cefn Druids should capitalise on their poor defensive form, so we’re backing both teams to score, with Trakai claiming a 2-1 victory to progress.
