Trinidad & Tobago vs Mexico Predictions

Mexico look like they are well equipped to be the dominant force in this final World Cup qualifying stage in Central America and they already find themselves topping the standings. Trinidad are on just 3 points from 3 games but are by no means out of contention. However this is a match where they are likely to come out 2nd best.

If you can find a way to ignore Mexico’s abysmal 7-0 loss to Chile in the Semi-Finals of Copa America last summer, their record in international football over the last couple of years is exceptional. Aside from that game, they’ve not lost any of their last 30 internationals and you have to go back to June 2015 for their previous defeat when a weakened Mexico side lost to Ecuador at Copa America 2015. They’ve won 16 of their last 20 international fixtures and 75% of those wins were to nil.

That includes a 2-0 win in a tough game against Costa Rica on Friday night which has put them in pole position and they look much more assured than they did during qualifying for the 2014 World Cup when they only just grabbed a play-off place. They’ve conceded only 2 goals in 9 matches during this qualifying campaign and look well equipped to shut Trinidad & Tobago out in this game.

The hosts are the only remaining Caribbean side left in with a shot at making it to Russia. They picked up their first points of the campaign last week with a key 1-0 home win against Panama but they still look a little short on attacking quality with veteran forward Kenywne Jones still their main man up top.

They’ve only played 3 qualifying games so far this cycle against genuine top sides in this region in the shape of USA and Costa Rica. However they are yet to score a goal in any of those matches and that suggests they will struggle to break down a Mexico side, that has been very impressive defensively. The Mexicans have enough craft and creativity to unlock the home defence at least once so backing Mexico to Win to Nil at 8/5 looks to offer value.
