Hoffenheim vs Hannover Predictions

Hoffenheim scored three goals in the last 15 minutes last weekend to take a 3-3 draw away from Borussia Dortmund, with forward Ishak Belfodil proving himself a “super-sub” with two of those goals. Julian Nagelsmann will, therefore, have a welcome selection headache in terms of attack, with Belfodil, Joelinton, Kramaric and English youngster Reiss Nelson all battling it out for a place in the starting eleven. Nelson, in particular, will be eager to be named on the teamsheet after having sat out the earlier 2019 matches due to injury, only returning to the bench two weeks ago.

Hannover were thrown a lifeline when loanee Nicolai Muller scored two goals to seal a 2-0 win over Nurnberg last Saturday, while also bringing an end to their nine-match winless run (D2 L7). The North Germans moved off the bottom of the table and to within a point of the relegation play-off spot, and could move to within one point of 15th-placed Augsburg and safety with the right combination of results this weekend. You could say then that new coach Thomas Doll has been doing well enough following the dismissal of Andre Breitenreiter, but he’s got a tough challenge ahead with star forward Niclas Fullkrug ruled out for the rest of the season.

And it’s not looking promising for Hannover going into this. Hannover’s clean sheet against Nurnberg was one not only against a side that boasts the joint weakest offense in the Bundesliga, but was one against a side that played with ten men for most of the game. It does little to change what work needs to be done. Hannover hold the third worst defensive record in the Bundesliga – 44 goals conceded, an average of over two goals per game – and they’ve been at their worst when on the road. Hannover are winless in a massive 24 Bundesliga games on their travels (D8 L16). However, things get interesting when you see that they’ve only failed to score in 10% of their away days this term.

Hoffenheim’s defense hasn’t exactly been at it’s best either, and though you’d have to fancy them for a result, backing ‘both teams to score’ looks very appealing here. Such a bet has landed in a massive 82% of their home games, and as many as 90% of Hannover’s away ones, but ultimately, ‘How many goals can Hoffenheim score in 90 minutes?’ looks the main question here. And with Hannover having conceded two or more goals in seven of their last nine Bundesliga away days – in fact, the North Germans are on a 26-game wait for a clean sheet on the road – we feel that Hoffenheim should have a bit of a field day. Our prediction: 4-1 Hoffenheim.
