Fehervar FC vs Malmo Predictions

It’s all to play for in this Tuesday’s clash between Malmo and Vidi. The Swedes were the firm favourites heading into the tie but failed to make home advantage count last week and Vidi will feel as though they have a real chance to progress into the play-off round when Celtic or AEK Athens await. Given even the losers in that round go into the Europa League group stage, there is guaranteed European football until December on offer for the victors here.

That would be a huge achievement for Vidi, who have gone six years without appearing in a European group stage. The Hungarian champions certainly held their own in Sweden last week. Anders Christiansen grabbed the breakthrough for Malmo on the hour but former Charlton defender Loic Nego replied with a vital away goal for the visitors to leave the tie hanging in the balance.

Malmo are still the slight favourites to make it through and they do have more recent European pedigree having made the Champions League group stage as recently as the 2015-16 season. Their domestic campaign has been a poor one though and they already look too far back to stand any chance of defending their Allsvenskan crown so this match is a massive one in the context of their season.

Vidi are only just getting their Hungarian title defence underway and have 5 points on the board from 3 games so far. Their Champions League campaign has certainly gathered speed after a slow start, where they could only edge past Dudelange of Luxembourg 3-2 on aggregate. They didn’t look like a side that had the potential to reach the group stage then but they were more impressive in the next round with a 1-0 aggregate win against Ludogorets of Bulgaria, although they did benefit from their opponents being reduced to 10 men early in the 2nd Leg.

All of their matches in this season’s competition have been tight and this looks like it could follow a similar path. The bookies make the visitors the very slight favourites but it’s hard to see them running away with it, given they failed to seize the advantage in the home leg. Vidi have only lost 1 of their last 6 home games in Europe and will be well supported at the Puskás Akadémia Pancho Aréna on Tuesday night.

That will make it tough for Malmo but they do remain unbeaten in 10 competitive outings under new boss Uwe Rosler, which should help breed confidence in their camp. None of their last 6 matches have been settled by more than a single goal though and with Vidi having drawn 4 of their last 5 in all competitions, all the indicators are that this will be a very close game.

Backing the Draw could be the best bet in the Full-Time Result market.
