VVV Venlo vs Ajax Predictions

Ajax could only manage a draw at home to Heracles in the opening round of Eredivisie games last weekend, with their full concentration going on qualification for the Champions League instead. This weekend VVV provide the opposition for Ajax, but the Dutch giants had a qualifier in midweek and another on Wednesday which means Saturday’s Eredivisie game might well take second place.

VVV pulled-off a neat 1-0 win away at Willem II last weekend, continuing their fine pre-season form. Saturday’s hosts have gone unbeaten in their last six matches and with Ajax occupied with a Champions League qualification process, VVV will fancy their chances of causing an upset this weekend.

Post broke the deadlock with what turned out to be the winning goal against Willem II, in what many predicted would be a close game last weekend. Willem II had 64% of the overall possession and created a lot more scoring opportunities on the day, but VVV defended manfully and took one of their chances at the other end. Most wouldn’t expect VVV to pick up a lot of away wins this season, but their confidence will have grown following the Willem II victory and if they can pick up something against Ajax it will have been an excellent start to the new season.

Ajax’s first game of the season arrived just four days after the 1st leg of their Champions league qualifier against standard Liege in Belgium. Ajax dominated Heracles with 62% of the possession and nine shots on target to the visitors three, but the points ended up being shared as Ajax tired in the second half. Both of the games goals arrived late on and it was Heracles that took the lead through a Peterson strike in the eighty-fourth minute. That goal looked likely to be the winner, but Ajax earned a share of the spoils via an eighty-eighth minute goal from defender de Ligt.

Ajax we’re unlucky in that game, but it was clear to see that their energy levels dipped and focus was clearly on Tuesday’s 2nd leg against Standard Liege, which thankfully ended in a win and qualification for the next round for the Dutch giants. Ajax made five changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Heracles to the one that comfortably beat Standard Liege, and there could be just as many changes to the starting lineup on Saturday.

Ajax have a great record against VVV and even with five or six changes are capable of beating their hosts. However, confidence is high in the VVV-Venlo camp following a good pre-season and a winning start to the latest Eredivisie campaign. Ajax have a tough tie against Dynamo Kiev which is bound to take the majority of their focus this week, and VVV could be the ones to capitalise on that.

We’re confident that VVV will take something from their home game against Ajax and have backed the hosts with a double chance bet. VVV are unbeaten in their last six matches, while Ajax have drawn two and lost two of their last six matches. The visitors haven’t won any of their games this season that have come before or after a Champions League qualifier and VVV have conceded just two goals in their last six matches. As for a final score, we’re backing this game to end in a 1-1 draw and for both teams to share the spoils.
