VVV vs Willem II Predictions

Just a point and two places separate VVV and Willem II in the Eredivisie table heading into their match-up on Saturday. Hosts VVV lost 6-0 against Ajax last time out and will be determined to put in a much better defensive performance this weekend, while Willem II’s winning streak came to an unexpected end at home to Groningen on Saturday.

Ajax ran riot on VVV last time out, but only lead by one goal at the break following Ziyech’s thirty-fifth minute opener. VVV collapsed in the second half though, going 2-0 down through a Dolberg strike just seven minutes after the restart. Tadić made it 3-0 on the hour mark, and a frantic end to the match saw Neres and Huntelaar net in the final five minutes and van de Beek score the sixth and final goal in stoppage time. VVV ended the game with no corners, one shot on target, and 33% of the overall possession, in their worst performance of the season so far.

Willem II only have themselves to blame for losing at home to Groningen last weekend, as the hosts had 61% of the possession, over twice as many corners, and more shots than their guests during the ninety minutes. Two goals in the space of two first half minutes from Warmerdam and then Sierhuis saw Groningen lead at the break, despite Willem II creating chances of their own at the other end of the pitch but squandering them. The hosts did manage to pull a goal back ten minutes into the second half through Greek youngster Vrousai, but despite creating more goal scoring opportunities in the remainder of the match Willem II could carve out an equaliser and their winning streak came to an abrupt end.

We’re expecting a very tight and tense match between two teams with ambitions of playing European football next season that are only separated by a single point in the Eredivisie table. Four of the last six meetings between the pair have produced under 2.5 goals, and three of those games have ended in 1-0 wins. Two of VVV’s last four home games have seen under three goals scored, while three of Willem II’s last four Eredivisie games have also produced under 2.5 goals. Willem II remain the clear form favourites heading into the match despite that defeat to Groningen, as the visitors have claimed five wins from their last six competitive matches. It will be interesting to see how both teams react to their latest defeats, but we feel Willem II have the consistency to claim a narrow 1-0 win on Saturday.

Mlapa top scores for the hosts with seven league goals so far this season, while following the departure of Fran Sol the visitors next highest scorer is Avdijaj with four goals. We’re expecting a solid defensive performance from both sides this weekend, VVV’s in reaction to that heavy defeat at Ajax, and Willem II’s in order to return to the winning formula that saw four of their last five victories accompanied by a clean sheet.

We’re confident that under 2.5 goals will be scored in Saturday’ game, and have backed a narrow 1-0 win for Willem II. The visitors have form in their favour despite losing last time out, and with four clean sheets in their last six matches they should be able to hold back a VVV said that conceded six without replay against Ajax last weekend.
